Hairy Sailing on a windy day on Mar Menor

Post by jack-moss »

On Friday 27th January 8 sailors turned up for a sail.

The day was very calm and some of us were wondering if it was even worth taking out the boats due to lack of wind.

I assured everyone that the weather forecast was saying that there would be a strong wind by lunchtime so we rigged 3 of the boats and 2 Gambas and 1 Laser 200 hit the water.

Within one hour of starting out the wind speed had increased and white tops started to appear on the now choppy sea. This is normally a prompt for me to return to shore. When we got in, our concern went to the other 2 boats still out at sea a good distance away. Both were having to tack into the wind to make progress, with the Gamba making better progress than the Laser towards port.
Soon after the second Gamba had got in, we noticed that the Laser had overturned. So, 4 of us jumped in to the Gamba and sailed out to the stricken Laser. When we arrived the crew had got the Laser up again but the water in the boat after the capsize was making it very difficult to tack or make any headway. John sailed close to the Laser so that they could turn in our Lee. By the time we had all finally got ashore the crew of the Laser were both cold and very wet. Both Alan and Sean were encouraged to get dried off and have some hot drinks at our cafe in CTD. It was a tough day for Sean as it was his first day out in a Laser and with water temperature not much more than 8 degrees (if that) he may only want to sail in a Gamba until the weather improves into the Spring.
As for Alan he is slowing getting through our Shoestring membership to capsize with!!!!!

Fair winds to ya'll.

Pleased to report that Alan and Sean went out together again last Friday with no mishaps.
